Introduction:
This application allows users to visualize cancer incidence and mortality data for the most common cancers in South Carolina, as well as demographic data and screening resources in the state. An interactive map with Best Chance Network (BCN) providers is available. Click the tabs at the top of the page for information about the different cancers, and for more information on the data used in this application, and resources available.
Data Source:
-
Incidence data for SC statistics provided by the SC Central Cancer Registry (SCCCR), Division of Health Promotion and Services (HPS) Cancer Programs, SC DPH.
-
Mortality data for SC statistics provided by Office of Vital Statistics, SC DPH.
-
Screening data for SC statistics provided by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, Bureau of Maternal and Child Health, SC DPH.

Commonly Used Terms:
-
Age-adjusted rate - Cancer rates vary with age, and populations vary by their age distributions. Age adjustment allows for comparison of rates between different populations with different age structures. The "effect of age" is no longer present upon age-adjustment. Age-adjusted rates are calculated using the age distribution of the 2000 US standard population, and they are usually expressed per 100,000 population.
-
Cancer Incidence - The number of new cancer cases diagnosed during a specific time period (e.g., one year).
-
Cancer Mortality - The number of cancer deaths occurring during a specific time period, regardless of when cancer was diagnosed. I.e., the set of people who make up incidence and mortality for the same time period overlap but are not the same.
-
Prevalence – An estimate of the number or proportion of persons in a population with a certain disease at a given time. Currently, the SCCCR does not calculate estimates of cancer prevalence. The statistics provided by BRFSS are prevalence estimates.
